Any Plumbers???

So my toilet has been taken over by demons or something. I just got home and my daughter went to the bathroom and when she flushed it made a horrible loud sound (no idea on how to describe it) and water started coming out the top of the tank I guess its called. I shut the water off and noticed that the bathroom smelled weird now almost like a burned smell so I pulled the top of the tank off and it was almost like it had suction on the lid, when I got it off the water in the tank is a weird kinda grey color and there was smoke in there.

Does any one have any idea

Either this toilet has sat for a loooong time unused or somebody puored somethin in it. It would have had to sit long enough for whatever type of growth is gowing on in there to use up the available oxygen and I can't imagine how many years that would take even if it's possible.

From the smell I would suspect the odor to be like rotten eggs and turn out to be sulphur or somethin similar that would be combustable. It smoldered long enough to burn up the oxygen and just like a flash fire when you open a door on a burning building the sudden rush of oxygen when you opened the tank let it smoke. With nothing to burn though it just never developed.

Just a thought here, cause I"ve never seen anything like this before in a lifetime of workin on old houses. I sure don't know if I'd drink the water yet since I'm assumin this is well water and who knows what may have gotten into it.

Its not well water and the toilet was used this morning at 7am so it hasnt sat for very long. I havent tried turning anyother water on well because im scared of whats going to happen haha.
This house also is only about 4 years old.

Ok edit my daughter just tried to wash her hands and water came out but made the same loud noise. Im going to call the water company and see what they say. I hope its on their end.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

They said I have air in my lines and I have to let the water run for atleast 5 min. So Ill see if it fixes it I guess I just hope nothing explodes hahaha.

Edit im jsut gonna wait till my husband gets home. It has that horrible smell to it and not knowing what that is and being pregnant I would rather not breath it in.

Thanks for your help though

For you to get air in the main line they would have had to have been working on a water line someplace. Once they open that line up to outside air they are allowing growth to take place. That's why they always have a boil order on for a short while when they do this. If this is the case it won't take long for the Chlorine and other chemicals in the water to kill it off.

Wow they didnt even say anything about needing to boil the water, I might just run to the store and buy a few gallons to be safe. Is the water ok the shower in or should we maybe wait till tomorrow? They have been putting in new water line's but passed our house about a week ago so I didnt think it had a thing to do with that. She told me that they just got done hooking up our new water line and thats why we are having these problems.

Odds are pretty good that they are testing and everything is fine. Bottled water for a day or two to drink and cook with just to be overly cautious maybe. Bathing, dishes and all the other stuff is not an issue though.

Definately your water district was working on the supply line.In my neighborhood they will hang a flyer on your door a few days before they work on the line.

That happens here once a month. But usually after they disconnect my water for non payment.

Seriously though, you can shower in the water and be fine. Drinking and cooking probably ok also. You can fill the tubs and drain them and get the "bad water" out of the line.

Already mentioned air in the lines. Weird smell is sewer gas backing up. Where and why, I don't know

Diesel-N-Dust 04-16-2008 01:04 PM

There is not sewage in the supply line! The weird smell comes from iron in the water. Flush out your pipes like No Problem stated above.
