Question Importing Vehicles and Modifications.

So the rules in the here US of A, is that you cannot import any vehicle under 25 years of age, unless you pay for it to be tested to meet all american standards, and that would be some serious coin. Given that there are US companies, making some pretty decent diesels, that aren't available in the American market, my question is, how the smeg do we get them over here?

One loophole would look to be modified, if your vehicle is 'seriously modified beyond it's original intention' you are allowed it, as long as it passes local state regulations. So what constitutes a serious modification?

Buy the engine as parts and re-home it. But that only works in an are where the "gods" keep their heads out of your tail pipe. I use to have a lot of fun tormenting California's bureau of automotive repairs. CARB was my friend.

I actually have a friend who acquired one, though it was an R32, RB26DETT motor, RHD, AWD, and never legally inspected, it had an "odd" VIN, so he was able to somehow register it as a "kit car"....
