Fifth Wheel Rails Install.

Ok guys the previous owner of the truck had fifth wheel bars in it and took them out before they sold it. What they forgot was the brackets that bolt to the frame. They left them. So since I have my old bars from the 3500 and they match up I plan to install them. The only thing I need to know is what do I torque the bots down to? And does anyone have any other tips?

I don't know if there is really a spec as far torque, but snug them down good and make sure you get a grade of bolt!!! I've installed many in my trucks and I just crank them down good and tight. I'm sure someone here might know.

i'd say use an impact till it won't turn and then 90* if you can turn it that far.... lol well not really that tight but you get the picture. Lock-tight everything....... and don't forget washers, big ones and lock washers. and grade 8 or grade 10.5 bolts and nuts ONLY!!!

well im gonna go with the supplied bolts i will also locktite everything.

should i double bolt it? If they will fit?

Well turns out 2 bolts dont fi they arent threded enough so i put 2 grade 2 bolts in. Imthinking about going with this just tomorrow round trip is 40-50 miles. Then monday finding grade 8s. Do you guys think i will be safe?

well guys i decided not to pull it with my truck. Im going to barrow my dads 05. I decide tonight to check and make sure all the bolts were tight. I broke one of the grade 2s by tighting it with a wrench..... The head broke clean off. I also bent the wrench but we wont talk about that.

Probably a good choice. Why are you using Grade 2 bolts for anyway?...

Grade 5 minimum (for everything):

Only use grade 5 bolts for any of your hitches. They will flex with all the back and forth stress and strain as trailers pull in different directions. Over time grade 8's will snap because They are to stiff for the applcation. You won't find any hitch kit on the market with anything but 5's included.

That’s all the local stores have (Lowes and tractor supply) I only needed two because the other two I have don’t thread all the way up. The other guy didn’t have any of the holes going through the bed braces on the bed witch the long 4” bolts that have about 1 ½” of thread on are supposed to go through. Only 2 are grade 2 the others are reese supplied bolts.

Anyone know where to get grade 5s on the net for a good price?

Uncle Bubba 04-05-2008 01:53 PM

You can get the grade 5's anyplace that sells bolts for the most part but if you ever need bulk amounts of hardware always hit the farm stores. They typically sell by the pound and it's half the price of any hardware type store.
