international 4700 t444e NO START

ok im having a hard time here. i have a 96 international 4700 rollback with the navistar t444e engine. my father said it died then started and ran, then died and wouldnt run. i have been dickin with it and cant figure it out. it has crystal clean fuel, new fuel filter, cleaned the pre-filter screen, new cam sensor, and i tried an idm out of an f-350. it cranks nice and fast and has 40 to 50 psi of fuel pressure. i pulled the icp sensor out and turned it over and it is pumping oil, im just not sure how to test how much, or how to test if the sensor is working. also, any idea how to test if the idm is geting power or of the injectors are getting any kind of signal? i dont see any smoke of any color while cranking. im baffled. any input would be great. thanks

have you tried to see if it will start on starting fluid.

autofabricator 11-24-2010 11:42 AM

ya it will run on starting fluid but thats it. when the spray stops, the fire stops. i hate using that stuff but it i had to try it

We a have a fleet of these at work and its a regular problem. We have a scan tool to read icp but if you don't this method works too.
When cranking you should hear the injectors making a clicking noise. If you don't hear them you more than likely have a stuck ipr or oil got the best of the wires going to it and it needs those wire replaced. IHC sells a kit if thats the case

if its bad icp it will crank and act like it wants to start, maybe even barely rough run for 30 seconds or so, then die.

whats ipr? and how do i know it has oil pressure for sure? i think i might just throw an icp sensor in it just to eliminate that. i thought about the oil getting the best of the wires and it seems a lil unlikely that it would happen to both sides. i am almost positive the injectors do not click.

The ipr (injector pressure regulator) is a little valve that controls the pressure going to the oil rails in the cylinder heads. It resides down in the valley towards the front of the engine. Over time it tends to get clogged up with debris and can get stuck closed causing low power or no start conditions. I would replace the ipr and icp and it should start, worst case senario it could need a hpop.

Heres a site that kinda show what im rambling about.:w2:

that would suck, abotu how much are reman HPOPS going for

white93 11-29-2010 07:48 PM

A reman is about 1100 from International. They usually don't go bad unless you never change the oil or get the oil contaminated with lots of fuel or water.

ok thanks. im gonna order up the ipr and icp today and hopefully get them installed in the next couple days.is there any cleaning to the old ipr? or strictly just replace? im hoping it doesnt need a HPOP.. thanks for all your help. i will keep you updated
