318 detroit diesel

anyone here know how to turn up the fuel on a 318 non turbo detroit diesel?

What injectors does it have ? Also look for the restrictor valve usually in the back of the cylinder on the fuel return line . Some folks use to crank up the power by putting in a smaller restrictor in the fuel line , just don't go overboard .

But bigger injectors usually the place to start . Is this an old two valve head or four valve head? Run the rack and a good tune up goes a long way .

Low buck diesel power | turn up your fuel rate for free, or almost check this out also and see if it helps :yeah:

not sure what injectors it has.. i know its not all stock tho, its turned up somehow, just not sure how lol... im more interested in turning it up without spending too much money (engine is really worn out..) i think it is a 2 valve head. ive heard 'running the rack' but what does it mean?:humm:

It has a mechanical fuel rack and forgive me if I get my nomenclature wrong it has been at least ten years since I messed with a detroit but the individual injectors throttle levers or connected to a single rack . And when running the rack one makes sure the injectors are all opening and closing at the same time. Is your valve cover round with big knobs to take off or angular with rubber gromment washer and 12point head bolts to remove . Round covers are old style while angilar covers usually new style with four vave head. Now it is entirely possible for some one to have mismatched them in past .Not much will help with a worn out engine tune up will to some extent . But to find which injectors you have remove the valve cover and most all injectors will have a letter followed by two numbers on the main body on a round tag glued to or in a recess of the injectors main body

Two valve heads you set valve lash, run the rack, set injector timing height, And a few easy governor adjustments depending on which governor your engine has . Which if it is a primemover engine more than likely a limiting speed governor.

If ti has a four valve head you you adjust the valve bridges then set the valves . If you are going to do this yourself go on ebay and get a detroit shop manuel it will have pics and for better explanations than I can give . Hell local library can usually get you a manual if you don't want to buy one and the pics and descriptions are very easy to follow .

its the older style with the round valve covers, 8v71n . thanks for explaining the rack. yeah i know theres not alot to help out a worn engine. its just a toy tho lol do you know how difficult it is to swap injectors? ive heard that you have to like adjust each injector seperately? is that right?

Yes but it isn't that bad of a job . If you do it yourself when you go to start it the first time it is a good idea to put a vice grip on one of the racks incase a mistake was made and it tries to run away that way you can over ride it and shut it down manually .

You have any idea how many hours it has since last rebuild?

no idea how long ago, i do know that it threw a rod and the block has a patch hahah lol it makes alot of white smoke too... oh well haha im going to restore the truck and rebuild the engine after college:rocking:
