it has been proven that with a smaller turbo housing you will create more power. because you are packing the same amount of air in a tighter space which turns out more PSI. the only flaw i have found with this is when ur pulling a load, with a load on that small housing creates to much exhaust back pressure wich as we all know limits the preformance of the engine.

Someone needs to tell wade to get rid of his S400 off of his 1151HP duramax then.

Do some reading up on turbo maps to learn about the function of a turbo. Smaller housing with high PSI = super heating the air. Super heated air = less dense air, less dense air = bad for HP. You want a turbo that is rated to flow the amount of air you need that is in the efficiency island of that turbo. Might want to learn about choke and surge lines.

Just because you can get a smaller turbo to make more PSI doesn't mean it will make more horsepower than a larger turbo with less PSI. It's all about how many pounds of air per minute that turbo can flow efficiently.

yeah like i said before it will spool faster with a smaller turbo housing and might seem like it makes more HP in the lower end but once you get to the top end your gonna have nothin because you've hit your limit the turbo can push without overspeeding it, that why everybody that pulls and races have big turbo so they can push more air to burn the amount of fuel the putting into the engine,

ok ok ok so you would suggest me putting on a larger turbo?

yeah definately go with a bigger one but dont go crazy i would suggest running the stock one at first to make sure your pushing enough fuel to warrant a bigger turbo.

Just throwing a trubo at it without doing a little research is not really a good idea. If you read the links I put up for Turbo tech from garrett you will learn about the math that is part of using a turbo. Once you learn about the compressor map and the math that accompanies it, you will be well ahead of the curve. You will be able to determine the right size turbo for the engine and HP target you are shooting for. You will also be able to deterimine were in the RPM range that turbo will be providing the best airflow.

Also, a great book that is written in plain english about turbo systems is Corky Bell's

Maximum Boost: Designing, Testing, and Installing Turbocharger Systems

. Most of it is about gas engines, but the same principles apply to diesels.

Sure it is easier to ask someone else "I want X HP out of Y engine, what turbo should I use?" But, being able to make that choice on your own and knowing why that is the best turbo for you is much more satisfying.
