Probably a dumb question: sub to box match

Ok, so I picked up two 12" infinty ref subs very a steal and I am going to make a custom box for them later on but I want something cheap right now. The subs have a rating of 1.25 cu. ft. each and I was wondering if I put them in a box with less cu. ft. will it hurt them? The box I'm going to build will be sealed as will the cheap temp box. Will it blow apart? Thanks whoever can clarify this for me! Both subs will have plenty of power...

Ok first, no the box wont blow apart, but with less cubic feet you wont get the amount of bass out of them as they can do. Also depending on how much less you go, you could also get some distortion out of them. You may want to look into putting a port or two in the box, to gain airflow.

Too small of a box will not hurt the subwoofers, but they will definitely not perform up to expectations. You can add polyfill up to approximately 1.75lb/ft^3 to make a smaller box perform more like a larger box, but it's limited to an increase of about 35%.

All that said, a piece of 3/4" MDF is cheap, and will have enough material to make a plenty large box.

Agreed. As a general rule, the bigger the box the better the sound (up until a certain point of course, each sub has its minimum and maximum sq ft).

If you're looking for a cheap box, check out hifisoundconnection.com, you can get a dual 12" sealed box, 1.25 sq ft per sub, for $35, about $40 with shipping. Here it is:

Dual 12" Subwoofer Enclosure Box Sub Box - RF212H

Been using this box for 3 years in my car with my 12" Kicker Comps and 1000w mono amp.
