Default 95 Dodge Diesel To buy or not to buy?

Here is the story of how I found this truck and why I want to start this thread: (Sorry for the long post!!)

I went to a town that will remain nameless for certain reasons yesterday to look at some SWEET truck dealerships, and I saw a B-yoo-tea-full 4wd lifted 2008 Mega Cab long bed conversion with slightly oversized mud grips and a near perfect flame red paint job on it!! This redneck cadilac was a masterpiece in metal, but on my way to look at it, I saw a silver 95 single cab 1 ton dodge dually in a line of old dusty trucks facing the highway in front of a truck accesory shop with brand new diesel trucks in the showroom getting outfitted with lifts and pipe bumpers. I first saw this truck in the same spot when I went through there 3 months ago and it still sits with the seat covered in dust and a broken heart. The bed is full of cow and hay dents. I am pretty sure it was a farm truck, because there was no rear bumper or tailgate, it is all manual but the windows, the cab is full of empty smokes boxes, it's tray door pocket is filled with a bunch of shot .22 casings, behind the seat is a cheap womens bracelt, some beer bottle caps, and a few other things including a hand full of hay. It has the normal cracked dash and torn driver seat, but that should be expected. So I am 95% sure this was someones farm hauler that he could not afford to pay the repairs at this shop it's sitting at that was taken as collateral. The driver side steering arm is supported by a small stack of 2x4 pieces, so I wonder if it runs and if its for sale. We got out and looked it over. It only had 225,XXX miles and looked pretty solid minus the steering arm. We popped the hood and it's engine is pretty dirty from sitting at that shop for 3 months and being on the farm. The bed is beat like no other, but the backwall of the cab forward is really straight minus a baseball sized dent in the lower rear driver side cab corner, but its pretty well out of sight. The hood is just starting to lose it's clear coat and the cab roof is mostly primer. Thanks to the west texas dryness though, there is no rust. I went down there on a sunday afternoon and the shop was closed, but I plan on going back sometime this month. But thanks to it being a truck aftermarket shop, behind the line of trucks is a 24valve 98 Dodge 3/4 ton diesel extended cab that is sitting on top of a flatbed with 2 used Ranch Hand rear pipe bumpers sitting on it. This would solve the missing rear bumper issue. It might be a good truck for me, but if I find out it has something major like a cracked or broken frame, then it might be a good donor truck for an 80s Chevy cummins conversion I am thinking about.

My brother has a near-identical red 95 regular cab dually that is a 2wd auto on its original 12 valve with 326,XXX that keeps puttin along.

What do you all think about it? I like it, but I want some opinions first. I know this is hard to say without pics, but what do you think I should pay for this thing if the motor runs and the manny tranny is not hurt?? I have quite a lot of ideas in my head already, but I want to hear more!!! What do you think bombers??

If your looking for a project truck, then go for it. Chances are if it's been sitting you have an advantage of getting it cheaper then usual. Do you know why it has been sitting?

I am indeed looking for a project truck. He may sell it to me cheap just to get it off his lot. As I said, my older brother (17) has the same truck with an auto, and I know where I can rent a '20x"83 Bumper pull Car hauler trailer for $75 a day, or a '32 gooseneck for $125 a day. The old trusty '20 equipment trailer was recently sold, but I still have a TON of straps and about 5 '20 Tie down chains if buy this truck and need to trailer it home. And yes, I have hauled cars many a time before along with trailering a tractor a few times on a '32 gooseneck trailer. Sooooo if I need to trailer this home (Which I am pretty sure I will with that arm), I have the know how to do so.

And to answer the other question, I assume a customer could not pay the bill and it was taken as collateral, or he just flat out sold it to the shop owner. Going to find out this month or next....... Maybe sooner.

If you're lookin for a project and you like it thats all that matters. $500 for a runnin Cummins would be a steal under 2K would probably be a good deal depending on what it needs, it's hard to say value without checking it out.

IF YOU WANT A PARTS TRUCK ITS GREAT. BUT I WOULDN'T SPEND ANYMORE THAN $3,000.00 FOR THE WHOLE TRUCK. FIRST OFF. CHECK AND FIX THE KILLER DOWL PIN DO THAT AND YOU WILL HAVE A MILLION MILE MOTOR AND IT'S PROVEN.

Thanks for everyone's replys! I will try to get some pics when I go to look at it to give a somewhat accurate point of view. I agree on the $2000-$3000 budget was about what I was thinking if he throws in the bumpers on the $3k. Thanks everyone! Anyone else have input or suggestions?
