Default kdp question

ok guys i know this is like beating a dead horse! but i just want to know what this pins actual purpose is. besides falling out and creating carnage. a buddy of mine about 6 yrs ago had one fall out. he got lucky and just shot it through the timing cover. he said he never put another back in it and never noticed any difference?? so whats the real purpose thanks guys? is it really needed?

It is supposed to line the timing case up with the engine. Theoretically, if not replaced, the case can become mispositioned and cause some gear problems up front.
