Default Snapped Front Driveshaft!

Hey guys, new here and the forum looks great. Just recently picked up a 2000 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9l 24 valve Cummins. Last night i had just pulled out of the laneway and got on the throttle. Made it about 40 feet and BANG! Now, the truck was in 2wd, so the fact the front shaft snapped right at the slip yoke off the transfercase worries me. U joint is still in place but the acctual yoke the uni sits in snapped. What should i be inspecting and does this mean the truck is in 4x4 at all times?

The front driveline always turns. You should know if you are in 4 wheel when driving on dry pavement it would bind up going around corners.

Yeah it binds, but i thought it could be caused from a bad hub uni?
