So whats the right way to do the fule filter on the 12V 1996 cummins. Is there a primer, How can it affect the way the truck runs if instaled wrong. I do it myself and just want to do it right. Thanks for the help.

Also why can't I just turn my key and start the truck. I let the wait to start cycle and then turn the key every time. What should I look at first as determining the problem. I have to give it thorttle every time or it will die and or just barely stay at idle. should I plug it in no matter what?

 

Unplug the WIF sensor. Spin the filter off and take WIF sensor out of old filter. Unless there is not a plug in, take the sensor out of filter with it still on the truck and catch the fuel. The new filter should have a new o ring for the sensor, put that on with a light coat if oil on it and reinstall it into the new filter. Fill the filter with fuel and put a light coat of oil on the seal. Spin it back on hand tight and crank it over. It should start I have never had a problem with one. The wait to start is your grid heater running. What is your idle set at?

 

I have done all that with the fuel filter. I may be doing it right. But i just did not know if there is a manual primer to releas air and make sure filter is full of fuel. It takes me some cranking over to get it to start after so maybe Im not filling it up with enugh fuel.

My idle is at about 500rpm warm. Cold it will not even idel with out my foot holding 1000rpm but after a few seconts minuts it will stay at idle of so 500rpm . thats why I was in my head thinking not enugh initial fuel when I turn it over to keep it at idle. But I dont know alot on these diesel.

 

Yea that idle is very low you should be sitting at about 750 that should take care of your starting with the pedal and stalling. My idle is at 850 warm and holds about 600 cold with no throttle but i throw a stick in there for a high idle til it warms up. There is a hand pump/ primer on the lift pump if you want to try it and see if you have better luck with it next time. Turn that idle up and see how that treats ya if its still hard starting look for places where air could be getting in lines, fitting, injectors or seals. Also the over flow valve coukd be on its way out.

You could also be sucking air in at the fuel heater causing you to lose prime.....

 

How do I adjust the Idle, I know you do it when the truck is warm. but under the hood what and where am I goin.
