Hi so i have had my truck about a a month now and i figured its due for a transmission service its got about 110k on it i got the filters and was planning on dropping the pan and cleaning that up. now im ready to go only problem is ive been getting mixed answers on what transmission oil to run. any insight would be usefull thanks.

 

5R110's originally called for mercon SP. It's been replaced with mercon LV. If you can find any sort of service record that tells you the last time it was done, that might help to see what is in there, otherwise get a new flush done. My guess would be it has SP in it, but it's just a guess. I'm not sure if the two are compatible either, they may be, so it may not even be a big deal. One of those two though.

 

I HAVE A 2005 F350
i changed mine and used the Ford Mercon SP
and changed the toilet paper filter up the front
and dropped the pan
and cleaned the magnet by the drain plug

 

SP is still available, but hard to find. LV is 100% compatible w/ SP.

Even Valvoline Maxlife is acceptable, but I personally would use SP or LV.

 

Go to the dealer. It's a full flush and not that expensive. Make sure to note what they put in the tranny and do your own service later down the road.

 

I was just about to make a thread about this! I have the paper filter for the front too cant get it off, my trans hasnt been serviced in ages, still pink but long overdue, I was looking around and for once the dealership seemed to b the best deal..wtf??? How much should a flush cost guys? Worth doing yourself or let someone else do it?

Since the dealer will do a full flush and fill the $250+ is worth it to me. Just make sure which filters they replace. After its done you can make up your own interval. Drain the pan as you see fit, fill with 7-8 quarts.

 

Flush runs around $180 or something at my local dealer, but I haven't checked it in a while. $250 could be right now...

The flush is better since they heat the fluid and it will open the thermostat inside the trans to get ALL the fluid out. If you do it in your driveway, you're not getting the t-stat open.

I wonder if there is a way to control the t-stat through AE or if it's just a mechanical t-stat like what's in motor.... hmmm.

 

I was figuring in filters and such for $250 total.
