The 3rd gen 5.9 run 2 and 3 injection events depending on year, pre-04.5 is 2 with 3 on the rest.

The 6.7 system is capable of up to 5 events.

Cutting edge diesel injection systems are running 7-9 events on the piezo injectors.

Noise, efficiency, emissions. Those are the reasons for the multiple events.

 

makes you wonder how many times the injectors have to open and close in the life of the engine. must be in the hundreds of trillions.

for the older duramaxs, the pilot injection quiets the engine down, probably helps with efficiency some too. if you turn it off the engine sounds like a cummins or one of the older power strokes

 

Also, I think it has to do with the piston bowl design and the nozzle holes in relation to fuel atomization
