hello all

i recent bought a 02 duramax with a 6.6 in the great smog state of CA. after purchase the service engine light came on. It threw P0380 so after searching the web came to the conclusion it was the glow-plugs. After changing them the light went off then came back on after about 50 miles with P0700 which I reset with my scanner. The light stayed off for the rest of the day hauling. It didn't come back on until after replacing the batteries due to being drained by the lights from the trailer the next morning with P0380.


the moral of the story is i now have to smog the truck to renew the registration and it wont pass smog with service engine soon light on.

should i change the relay? the light will stay off normally the first start of the day but will either come on 5 miles down the road or when i restart the truck.

historically with a cali emmissions truck the glow plug relays are pretty solid so i doubt it.

did you change all the glow plugs?

These trucks are known for eating glowplugs and with 8 new ones you might have got a bad one. I would test them indivually and go from there.

You have to disconnect the wires in all of them first off. Easiest way is take a test light connect it to positive then touch each glow plug. If it lights up the glow plug is bad. You can also check resistance with an ohm meter but I recommend the test light method. Iis alot easier

 

Thank you so much Fox. Looks like today will be judgement day. Got in the truck this morning and no ses light, but when plugging in my scanner it still comes up with P0380. I don't know if this could mean something else just thought I would throw that info out.

Bad the light comes and goes.

 

just got done checking them all and they all were good. But I did notice that the nut holding the wire on was loose on a couple could that be the rest for the ses light? I made sure everything was nice and snug when re-connecting everything. the light went off in the truck but the code still comes up on my scanner with a yellow light. if i fixed the problem how long would it take for the computer to not show the code?

 

Im not sure how many warm up cycles. Just drive it for a week and see.
