Default MPG penalty with wide tires

Could some with first hand experience comment on fuel economy loss when switching from the stock 235/85/16 tires to a wider tire such as a 285/75/16 assuming both tires have highway tread? I'm actually thinking about going the other way around and want to know if it would be worth it to install a narrower tire.

tall narrow tires if you want milage and power. I run 265 75 16 and like them looks good enough for now and cruises pretty good. I want to go to 35s but need to lift the front and some other stuff.

I have 33 11.5 16 nitto mud grapplers with deep offset wheels 10 inches wide and i average 16-22mpgs. Narrower tires actually do alot better than wide tires anyway in mud and snow

also depends on gearing, if its low geared itll run a taller tire better with less effort than if its high geared running a tall heavy tire.

From what I understand, the friction caused from wide tires is more than a narrow tire. Wonder what the difference is?

generally speaking, bigger tires (either in width or diameter) will always yield poorer fuel mileage, with the exception of slightly taller tires in a purely or nearly purely all highway-driven truck. The diesels have enough torque you won't notice it much within an inch or 2 change one way or the other. Gassers will quickly become real pigs on any size tire increase. The big MPG hit on the Ram diesels comes when you get up over around 35" or so.

Narrow tires on a 1st Gen. looks like...... a fat lady in a mini skirt, with high heels.
