If its the later 99 you shouldn't have to worry about dowel pin.I had a 99 and regretfully sold it I had a edge ez chip and staight exhaust.not to much money those mods helped a bunch you will love that truck goodluck

get a good lift pump on it so you can keep that vp44 alive. they arent cheap and a fuel pressure gauge is a must also

'99 is a 24 valve motor meaning the design of the dowel pin was changed over from the 12 valves, you don't have to worry bout it. And yes, aftermarket lift pump is a MUST, AirDog or FASS being the more popular but there're are more out there. You're also going to need gauges, mainly fuel pressure, tranny temp., and boost.

Some 24v trucks had kdp issues as well. It was 2000 or 2001 the issue was actually fixed

It's not really bad to pull apart. It's really the best way to know if its a issue. I have only seen 2 vp trucks drop a pin. A 98.5 and early year 99.
There was also a jig available at one point that would allow you to do it without removing the cover

Yup, totally spaced on that, my bad. But it really isn't all that hard to take the cover off to kill it. Plus, this way you can actually check the cover and everything else inside to make sure the pin hasn't already fallen out and hurt something, just to be safe.
