Auto to manual swap
I've been toying with the idea of swapping in a nv4500 instead of buying a built auto. Only thing I was concerned with was finding all the small parts for the swap. Well, I found a 97' 4x4 3500 5 speed that was wrecked and has everything but the trans still in it. I can get pretty much everything I need for free or cheap. Do yall think it's worth it to do the swap? Is there anything else I'm going to need besides a trans, clutch, and fix the 5th gear issue?
Go for it. Another upgrade you might want to think about is the larger 1 3/8" input shaft. Another thing to check for is a cracked tail housing/adapter housing at the back. Mine was cracked and we had to tear it all back apart to replace the cast aluminum housing.
Well my parts truck fell through so now I'm back at square one. What really sucks is I just missed out on another parts truck at a salvage yard not far from me. They just crushed it yesterday
Been there done that....
Transmission shifter/****
Trans/t-case combo floor plate and boot
get measurements to cut the new hole in the floor
Transmission cross member from manual truck
Front and rear drivelines
Manual trans pedal set
Clutch hydraulics
clutch, pressure plate, flywheel
Throwout fork
Throwout bearing
Manual trans bell housing
Manual trans gauge cluster (if you wanna lose the PRNDL gear indicator)
Manual trans steering column (or take the pin out of the auto shifter and remove)
Transmission mount
Rewire neutral and back-up switches
In addition.....
Replace xfer case input gear from the auto 23 spline to the manual 29 spline hub
Also note, the trans MUST have the right year specific extension housing (aka tail housing)
on it, as the 4wd shift linkage has different mounting bosses 94-98 and 98.5-01. So make
sure of the years of your truck vs. the donor manual transmission

Neighbor, I really love the G-56 that's in mine, now, but, it was SO not cost-effective
I should have done one of two things, early on... either get a damn manual-equipped one in the first place, or go ATS from the flexplate back before the first tranny blew up
