Default 85 f250 6.9

My truck has started eating glow plugs. It used to start realy well, flashing up with half a crank. Then all the glow plugs failed during our last cold snap. The mechanic went through a couple sets before installing a push button. Now the plugs are gone again. Are there different quality plugs? Is the issue deeper inside or did I hold the button down too long?

Thanks for any help or advice. Essie.

if it is push button u are the only thing that controls them. u probly over burned them. also timing of the injection can "eat" glow plugs if the timing is to advanced.

be sure ONLY to run motorcraft or buer or international plugs. others when they burn out tend to swell and break the tip off into the cyl.

How do you determine if the timing is out? Would the other brand of plugs last longer? In my old loader the glow plug switch is to be held on for up to a minute for colder starts. Is 5-8 seconds to long for a truck?

Timing is how advanced your injection pump is. Too much fuel on start can burn out the plugs over time. 10 seconds max for the IDI.

Would timing be an issue if it still has its factory setting? Thanks.

I went threw the same thing on my 85 6.9 I tried replacing the controlers and relays. I think my main problem was the entire wire harness itself. But I gave up and have been using either for the past 10 years. Its cheaper then glow plugs

But if you try either unhook your glow plugs, that is a must. And it only takes a 1 second squit.

I am having a tough time with this website. Thank you for your advice. Is there anyway to fix the wiring harness?

www.AccurateDiesel.com - Accurate Technical Services, LLC They have really good glow plugs. Buy them and throw them in. Your timing should be fine. Also wiring harness should be fine. Just install new plugs, hold push button for no longer than 10 seconds. That should work.

Check out diesel auto services out of Canada. They have a constant duty plug you can run with the push button. I have had Beru plugs on my truck yet they burn quickly if you hold the button on for more than 12 seconds. Pricey but worth the dime, I believe the box they came in said Dipaco.

Good luck.
