Default Ring gear on flexplate/flywheel

Has anyone changed out the ring gear on your flexplate/flywheel? mine are bad and my starter barely engages it, so i was wonder how it is done and if its hard. i would rather do this than buy a brand new one. I prefer $30 over $400 any help would be well helpfull

I havent replaced just the gear edge on the flex plate, Im sure it would be fine, since its just welded on. Getting to that gear though involves removing the tranny to get to the back of the engine. Honestly, If you can afford a newer flexplate, it would be a good buy.

Don't but OEM, go aftermarket for around the same price, the billet flexplates are so much more reliable, and will last longer. You dont have to worry about ripping the center out if you got the throttle to the floor.

And if youre pullin the tranny, it would be a good to replace the rear main seal as well, just in case since youre already right there.

If you did replace just the ring gear, you'd have to balance it anyway. I would just get an aftermarket one.

Did one on a tractor once just heat it till it falls off lay the new one on the flywheel and heat it till it drops on, not sure if it's the same procedure on a truck. I think on the automatics you just change the whole flexplate.
