15-40 is the weight you want. stait 30 is to thick when you first fire it up, your kind of starving your turbo and valvrain on start up and then its too thin once its warm, strait weight oil is a thing of the past. i personally prefer mobil delvac. its the only one that still has 1300ppm of zddp, all the others have been cut down to under 500, which really isnt an acceptable amount to protect the high pressure components like the camshaft and valvetrain. 1300 really isnt even much, i run motorcycle oil in my gasser since it has upwards of 2000ppm of zync just like all the good oils back in the day had, problem is it doesnt have enough detergent to run in a diesel and expect any kind of life out of. they take more and more of the antiwear additives out because it kills catalytic converters as you burn it over time... one more reason to hate the epa. our trucks dont have cats so put the oil thats loaded with all the good stuff that saves your engine and makes tons of emissions...

people also seam to think that rotella-t is loaded with zync but they recently changed their formula, its junk just like delo and all the others now. i see that valvoline has a diesel oil thats not very popular, id like to see what the additive package in it is like.

With the mutli grades of today, the straight have really gone away. They offer the advantages explained above. Can a 30 be used? ...sure in the right circumstances. If you live somewhere where the temp doesn't drop below 50 and you allow the engine good warm up time, it can work. Many use 5/30 without problem, but staight 30 needs ideal situations.
