Default FUEL PROBLEM...

ok i will try and make this short.. My dads 98 24valve had an oil pressure sensor go out so we replaced the 200 dollar part and since we were right there , changed the fuel filter since he hadnt changed it since i owned it. so 100k on a fuel filter ... when we got it started it ran fine for a day or two. now all of the sudden it cranks for 30 seconds b4 it starts even if he bumps the starter and the fuel pump kicks on. if the truck has been running and u shut it off it will start right up. took it to a shop and they added a fuel pump in place of the stock lift pump, didnt help just cost 300 bucks. they say vp bad... dad and i think maybe otherwise, any suggestions? b4 he has to bite the 1500$ bullet

Kyle,

Lukesdiesel is right on point. Have you or your dad checked for codes. That will help point you into the right direction. Hope you get it going.

Kyle,

When I bought my truck it had 260k on it. Once I threw the Edge J/A on it I saw that the fuel PSI was dropping below 5 PSI. So I put on an Airdog 150. Needless to say I had to replace the VP44 as well. When the lift pump goes, the VP44 will still pull fuel, but will eventually fail. Really need to check to see if it has any codes.

Is it leaking fuel at all? Maybe the o-ring on the filter cap was bad and its sucking air or losing prime? Just throwing ideas out. Blue chip diesel has some very good vp44 info with specific issues to look for to rule out pump failure.

Kyle,

I think the 1693 is a companion code from what I have heard. You may have another code that might require a reader to get it.

I am with oudive, check for another code. Also, have your dad park with the nose/front of the truck downhill. This will help check for air leaks at the fuel filter, losing prime. When he does this, he may see diesel on the floor.
