ok guys, i know the stock steering on a dodge sucks. and i already know about the hydro assist for 800$ i could get, but with money being an issue i didnt know if there was any tips.

my steering box has so much slop in it, like over 90* of slop in the wheel, it is all tight to the steering gear, so thats my culprit. i have a new pitman arm and tie rod ends. steering gears the problem. is there anything that can be done to tighten it up? im good friends with a guy that owns a junkyard. i was just going to go out there and turn the wheels on some wrecked trucks out there and find the best one and hopefully get it for cheaap. i think anythings about better than what i have now so its worth a shot. does anyone know if they ram the same gears in 1/2 tons? if they did there would pry be in better condition than a heavy 3/4 ton, especially with the cummins, any helps appreciated

 

New steering box, steering stabilizer bar, tie rod ends, other linkages. Thos big tires are gonna go through ball joints and **** so fast its not funny.

 

i have 3 new steering stablizers, new tie rods, new pitman arm, new ball joints

 

there is an allen head bolt on the top of the stearing box with a nut that you can tighten i did it to mine and it helped a little but i was on all data the other day and printed out the whole procedure on how to tighten all the bearings up so if you want that i can scan it up

 

New steering box, steering box brace, have you replaced the steering shaft from the column ? stock ones are junk

 

I've got a Red Head steering gear, it's a lot better than the stock ones.

Or, you can get the gear and shaft from Borgeson, they're very good, but pricey.

 

The shafts tight with no play all the way into the box. So the shaft should be good

 

I had the same problem. I cheaped out and put a Cardone gear in mine. Its done well and was $180ish. The 1/2 tons aren't the same as ours because of the cummins.
