Default Cold weather starting

I cant help but to comment on how this 5.9 starts when temps are below freezing. It starts well but then goes to fast idle, around 11-1200rpm. If I blip the throttle it will settle down to around 9000 but then idles up again. It takes about ten minutes for it to settle down to normal rpm.
Is there anything I can do to have smoother starts in cold weather besides plugging in the motor overnight? That is not useally an option when I am on the road .

What you're experiencing is normal. Let it sit for a few minutes to warm up, or invest/make your own radiator cover to help keep the heat in and maintain operating temps.

Sorry if that post sounded dumb. Idle seemed a little high and long compared to my other diesels.

im in the army and every time its cold we idle it up to 1500 to get every thing going and warm, thi new humvees and m-raps do it on there own so its a good thing. its warming up the turbo, water and all the other fluids while pumping up the batt.

Thanks guys, What brought this up was, I'm up in Iowa and a couple of mornings ago it was down right chilly. The truck was outside the hotel room and I started it and went back inside. Then I hear what sounds like a runaway diesel. First time hearing that.

I guess with mine being in the garage and I'm near the IA/MN border is why mine has not yet kicked in to fast idle after start up.

Hotels with garages are generally out of my price range.
