i just bought a 1994 cummins with 300,000 miles on it.
i know the guy i bought it from and its been all stock its whole life and has the stock clutch still( it was an old mans truck)
well its got an oil leak and i have been trying to find it so i covered the front with baby powder and took it for a drive.
from what i can tell its coming from next to the fan, what could it be?

Either the timing cover gasket or the kdp made and exit and cracked the case since that's a common area for it to break. But I'm guessing it's just the seal.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question sooner but I'm guessing you found out. Sucks bud

 

KDP isshort for Killer Dow Pin...its a nice small round pin that the factory presses into the block to locate the timing cover. After time,this pin starts to vibrate out of its set and eventually, if not caught it time, will works its way out of the block and can cause catastrophic damage to your engine.

 

ya i had found that out. the truck was leaking oil for a year before i bought it and it turnd out that the kdp had come out and went through the cover and the oil was spitting outta that hole. i guess the last owner got lucky that it didnt do any major damage.

 

They generally don't do major engine damage, they just trash the damn timing cover. Unless there's some way to repair the cover on the truck (like tig welding it) you'll be in for a big job. Removing the whole cover from the engine in turn requires removing the camshaft, which in turn requires devising some way to hold the lifters up. I've never done it, but I gather it can be done at home. You should be able to find instructions to do it.
