Well this has been happening for a while..

I'll leave my truck sitting for a while.. and it will take about 6-10 seconds for it to crank. If I cut it off, and start it back up... it fires up fine.

I can take my gas cap off and hear lots of vapor being released... as well as you can get under the truck after you cut it off and sound like the diesel is trickling back to the tank.

Any ideas?

I replaced my VP44 less then a year ago with a BD-Power HP pump.. so I don't know if it's my VP going out or what.

I am suspicious of your fuel cap. High transfer pressure will cause hard starts with a VP44.

What do you think would be the solution or some things to check?

You coul drive around with the fuel cap loose and see what happens during restarts. Could also be the pressure relief valve located in the return banjo bolt of the VP44

I have a very similar problem and it's been that way since the day I bought the truck, even before I started upgrades. I've been told it sounds like there's a small leak that's letting some air into the lines and pushin the fuel out of the motor causing the hard start. Have u tried clicking the starter to run the fuel pump for a fee seconds before cranking? This works for mine. It always starts, just takes a few seconds sometimes. Frustrating. Haven't found a leak yet and don't really know what to check. If it's parked with the front end of the truck downhill, it starts fine. If the front of the truck is uphill, well that's another story

Yep, sounds just like mine... just sort of embarassing sitting there cranking it for like 10 seconds haha.

My friends 01 was doing the exact same thing are yours. We replaced the Lift Pump and the Return fuel valve and it fixed it.

Nope, bumping it and letting it run still does the same thing. I've got an Airdog so I don't think it's the lift pump.... return fuel valve is on the banjo bolt right?

Correct, it is built into the return banjo bolt.

And it goes down the side of the block to where? I know there is a TEE fitting somewhere at the back I do believe, I wonder if there could be a leak there..

During the winter it was leaking diesel from under the truck, but it stopped this spring..
