Default why does the '94 -'98.5 have a larger harmonic balancer?

I'm in the process of swapping all the accessories from a '96 12v to a '93 12v and noticed that the '96 has a larger balancer on the front of the crank. Anyone know why? And should I use the larger '96 balancer or the smaller '93 one?

Thanks

if you use a 93 crank and fly wheel use the 93 balancer and so forth

Thats what I was planning, but why did they change it I thought maybe it was just for reduced vibrations or something. Is the '93 flywheel different?

I think I answered my own question, southbend lists the same clutch/flywheel from '88 up.

the 1st gen clutch disks are 13" while the 2nd gens are 12.25". the south bend clutchs are all 13" so its an upgrade for the 2nd gens.

Why would dodge downsize the clutch and increase the horsepower and weight of the truck, but you had me scared for a second because I've got a 13" clutch kit from southbend that I'm going to install on the '93 block

LOL, someone should have installed some learnin' into that engineer

I was looking at both of the harmonic balancers and they do NOT have a pin or anything on them so they can be installed in any position relative to the crank. Is it safe to assume that means they are neutrally balanced?

If I install the smaller balancer on the newer truck will it throw off my tach reading since the sensor will be closer to the crank center?

I also found some info stating that cummins has 2 different styles of balancer 1 for engine speeds above 2500 and 1 for engine speeds below. does anyone change the balancer when they install a 4k governor kit?
