bad computer, still runs?
Hi all, i have a 2001 dodge ram 2500 standard output that im having some issues with.
1. the odometer doesn't roll over, after some research i found that the dash it has is from a 99, instead of an 01 (the miles are on a gray background, black digits, instead of black background, green digits)
2.When i turn off the truck the high beam bulb stays on in the dash, and after a couple of days it seems to run the battery down.
3.The alternator seems to have been replaced and the wiring spliced to connect a stand alone regulator from what i think is an older cummins.
Now, i bought this truck like this and just recently decided to figure out why the check engine, abs and air bag lights are on, ran a diagnostic on it and came back with 13 codes!
Somebody told me that the computer most likely went bad and it was bypassed therefore explaining a lot of the problems i just described, some of the codes were repeats and below are the codes and the explanations i got from alldata:
P0128 engine too cold too long | engine does not reach operating temperature
P0234 turbo boost limit exceeded | problem detected in turbocharger wastegate
P0382 intake air heater relay #2 control circuit | problem detected in #2 heater solenoid/relay circuit (not heater element)
P0500 No vehicle speed sensor signal | no vehicle speed sensor detected during road conditions
P1287 Fuel injection pump cntrller supply vltge low | ECM or fuel injection pumpmodule internal fault condition detected. Engine power will be derated.
P1380 ??????????????
P1689 No communication between ECM and injection pump module | Data link circuit failure between ecm and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated or engine stops.
The truck runs and drives great, plenty of power, no issues (its a 5 speed) so does anyone have any insight on to what this may mean? thanks in advance guys

po128 possible thermostat issue (use cummins to replace)
po234 is your turbo wastgate wired?
po382 check your intake heater relays (drivers inner fender down low) heater element burned out ?
po500 check your speed snsr on top of rear diff and the wiring to it
p1287 po1689 sorry cant help here. Im sure someone will chat here. Posibble broken wire between ecm (eng. mounted) and vp44 modual

hello everyone, I have checked the cabling and i dont see anything that is loose or broken, however i finally realized why i have no speedometer, basically the sensor in the rear axle is fine, its just taht there's a harness thats disconnected from the abs controller pump in the front (I have 4 wheel disc and abs brakes) and when i connect it the pump buzzes like its frozen.
I finally realized why that was disconnected, however as soon as i connect it and drive the truck (pump buzzing away) i have my speed sensor back. Any ideas as to where i can get a replacement, or how to troubleshoot it? I can't seem to find any cheap, and i was wondering if its allright to drive the truck with the pump buzzing as it is right now, i think its frozen and i figure nothing bad can come from it, can it?
Sorry about the slow response time, i have been swamped with work, i need to get the thermostat from cummins (they're going to ship it) and after erasing the codes with a cheapie little scan tool the only one that comes back is the speed sensor one..
Also whats the CAN system? all the help is very apreciated, thank you gentleman.

hello everyone, i would like to thank everyone that pitched in, as well as to add in some information in case anyone in the future comes across the same problems.
Basically the abs control module that goes in the engine bay froze and the previous owner disconnected the entire harness, if you do that you will lose your speed sensor and have no speedometer and no mileage rollover, however you can connect the harness BUT disconnect the ABS fuse and still have speedometer minus the abs pump and ABS system.
As to the wastegate problem it seemed to fix itself after i cleaned out the inside of the turbo with some brake cleaner and some q-tips, and the intake heater problem was resolved after i took off the connectors, cleaned them and put a little wd-40 then reassembled.
Now i cleared the codes with the scanner and the truck is happily running along, i hope this information is of some use to someone in the future. Thanks much.
