my buddy is looking at a 2001 6 speed ext cab short bed right around 100000 miles. Guy says its show room quality but we will see when we go to look at it. He is asking 15,995. Is this a good price and is there anything we should look for when we go to look at it. Thanks in advance.

if at all possible, check the fuel pressure. if it is less than 10, it could be an indication that the vp44 my fail soon.

other things to look for on a second gen dodge is the steering. parts wear weird and give the "death wobble" feeling.
pull air cleaner tube off, and give the turbo blades a wiggle in/out and side to side.

others will chime in i'm sure, but that's some of the major stuff i looked for.

 

imo i wouldn't get the truck if i was your buddy an 01 with that many miles is only worth 12k at the most

 

Did you do a NADA or Edmunds check on it? When I bought my 01 back in December the average retail on it was $13,500 with 200,000 on it. Paid $9500.00 for it and have went threw everything on it that needed tweaking along with a set of new tires. So have close to the $13,500 in it now and just put 3500 miles on it in June pulling a 26' 5th wheel with no problems. Have the auto trans in it. My 14 year old grandson says it is the best truck ever.

Listen to see if there is any noise in 6th gear. The bearing for 6th gear is the one that goes bad on those trannys because its enclosed in the housing and doesn't get the oil like the other bearings. Mine went out at about 240,000 miles but I was hearing a different noise in 6th gear for a while before it locked up on me. I don't know how to explain what it sounds like, the other gears were quiet like normal and 6th gear sounded kind of like dragging a cardboard box over concrete. It wasn't loud or grinding, but I noticed it.

If I had it to do over, I would have taken the tranny to a shop to get the bearing replaced as soon as I started hearing that noise. It would have saved me a whole lot of money. I could have got that bearing replaced for under $1000 including labor but I ended up spending about $5500 in getting a rebuilt tranny, labor, didn't get core return because the gear was seized up, but that does count a southbend clutch and hydraulic cylinders.

If its 4x4, make sure it goes in 4wd smooth and not sound like you hit a brick wall. The belt in the transfer case will go bad if someone's been shifting into or out of 4wd at high speed.

 

Local supply and demand will dictate price.

If the local area market is flooded, then pricing around NADA/KBB may apply.

If it isn't, he has something you want and how bad do you want it.

Also in addition to the mentioned, look for rust. Rockers and bottom of doors on the inside. That is one option that no one orders that the majority of everyone gets.

6th gear on an nv5600 is in the main case with the rest of the gears. And there is no belt in the transfer case.
