i have a question im new to diesels and i have the chance to get a 1999 cummins its auto with a qaudzilla chip banks waste gate and banks high ram air intake manafold. but i also could get a 99 cummins thats a 5 spd and has 150hp injection pump and 100 hp injectors. i dont know witch is better i was wondering if i could get some help? thanks.

 

Ive had both an Auto and a 6spd. The 6spd is more fun to drive but built right the auto will be a much faster truck. It really depends on your preference. Also keep it mind its about 5 times the cost to built an automatic to hold the power of the Cummins compared to an aftermarket Clutch.

either way you go, you will be upgrading the tranny or clutch, unless they are allready upgraded, but as to which one to get, what will you be using the truck for, towing,racing sledpulling, daily driving etc. Post up what the plans for the truck is and that will better help decided if you want auto or manual

i own a farm so its gonna be mostly towing. But i think that im gonna one day do a little pulling.
the 5spd has an aftermarket clutch in it made by luk, the auto is stock.

what should i check out when im looking at these both have new inject pump

the 110 hp injection pump is just a hype I believe so you really are not going to see very much gains with different vp44's, as for what you are going to use the truck for I would say a manaul, you can get a good clutch that will be ok for a little sled pulling then on the other hand will be a very streeetable clutch like a south bend 3250 dd. If they both have new injector pumps, it would be a real good idea to get an aftermarket lift pump, on the truck if you buy one of them if that has not allready been done so.

Manuals are the right way to go with almost any vehicle in my opinion. As a buddy used to say "shift your own gears" I have a manual 5spd and I wouldn't trade it for an automatic pretty much any day just because I feel more in control and etc driving and having to shift.

 

I really enjoy my Auto, but in your situation a manual trans may be the better way to go. I have a shift kit and triple billet T/C and it shifts RIGHT NOW. I debated on which one to get as well when I was in the market. The big things I considered was my daily drive, my sloped driveway, and how much towing I was going to do. I pull about 15 to 20 times a year, and only about 10,000 to 15,000 at the most. The auto has held up very well for myself. Just had it flushed the other day, and the fluid was still decent after 65,000kms. That's my 2 cents.
