Does anyone know what the filter and fluid cost for a standard transmission service on a 2004 Superduty 4WD Auto?

Also what does the steelership want for a turnkey service on the standard fluid / filter service on the same truck?

 

I think the dealer is close to $200 for everything. If you're doing a full flush, it's best to have the dealer do it. The 5R110 has a thermostat inside that opens at I believe 180 degrees F. If it's not opened, you dont get all the fluid out. Unless you have the equipment to do it (which I doubt most guys do), then the dealer is the best bet.

 

the filter from ford and you will want a factory part on the filter will look like a toiled paper roll and cost around 40 bucks. then plan 7-10 quarts of mercon sp which is just about a dealer item unless you want to find it off the net. ford now reccomends using mercon lv which is still hard to find but there is one fluid i found at autozone for like $4.50 qt. it is reccomended to be used with both mercon sp and lv it was valvoline high milage.

 

my freindly ford dealer got $275 to do a FULL flush on my tranny at the 50k mark on my odometer ?? I need to sevice it again but I have not been able to locate Mercon SP at the auto parts store, my local napa man says that he can special order what I need but I think that he is getting it from ford? I have seen the Mercon lv but did not know it could be used in the tranny.... (these things could be a big $$$ repair if you put the wrong fluid in) has anybody used Royal Purple??? I've heard some good things but it's very expensive. Is the t-stat inside the tranny... or is it mounted under the truck up front under the driverside near the bottom of the radiator??? if you fallow the cooler lines from the trans to the radiator they go through a distribution block that looks like a filter or ? could this be the t-stat ? and if it is then could'nt you just undo the coller lines and blow the fluid out of the cooler and lines???? just an idea. $275. for a trans service is just to much in todays world.

 

That is a filter up by the radiator. Looks like a roll of toilet paper. Everyone I've talked to says to just run the Mercon stuff from Ford.

 

Given how much a 5R110 costs in the aftermarket, I would NOT trust "everyone I've talked to". Unless of course they are a Ford or ASE transmission mechanic. Just my input.

I was at Kragen and found a trans fluid that was a suitable substitute (written right on the bottle) for that SPENDY Mercron SP fluid for $4.95/quart. I also read on Diesel Bombers that an 08 pan and filter upgrade is pretty snappy, too. My pan filter wasn't much (it came with a gasket, although my trans had a Cool-Guy reusable one), but the 10 quarts and the $45 case drain filter (that's what we call them on airplanes anyway) made the service $100. MUCH better than paying someone else to do it.

 

I don't have a transmission flush machine that will raise the temperature of the oil to open the t-stat though so I can't do it here myself.

"everyone I've talked to" has mostly been 6.0 guys including techs on the forums, mainly ps.org and psn.com Ford pays engineers to design a fluid to work with their transmissions, I'd say they know what they're doing. Although there may be other options out there, I would hope it would be safe to use the fluid that Ford themselves recommends.

 

thanks guys your input really helps. but I really like to replace ALL of the fluid in my trannys when I service them, this ones just a bit more complex and costly to repair if things should go wrong. my fluids in great shape as it is, the truck shifts perfectly, no foul smell to the fluid so a quick fluid change of the pan oil should be ok..?? so it's about ten qts. and a couple of filters .. piece of cake..at $5.00 a qt. it's like buying that SPECIAL GOLDEN harley oil that HD has sold so many people on..(thats another topic for another web site).. it's still cheaper than a new trans.

 

Mercron is recommended by Ford, just not for the 5R110....
