Default Tranny locker

ok i posted about my transmition not shifting into od a while back and someone told me that there was 2 wires on the passenger side of my 91 2500 cummins transmition and ive looked and looked and i cant seem to find them he said that on was a 12volt hot wire and the other was a ground and hes said i could splice in a switch to the ground so that when i flipped the switch on it grounded the circut and it should shift into od and stay locked in my friend just did this to his 97 cummins for better fuel economy and it works great butt we cant seem to find that damn wire i would love anny advise you guys have on this matter thanx

What year trans do you have ??

The '93 has a connector that is vertical pointing up towards the cab floor close to the trans cooler lines that cross over toward the passenger side cooler..
That's the connector you're looking for.
It's Gray with 2 wires.
One is red/lite green stripe -- This is the one you need to connect to ground with a switch. It's controlled by the ECM and that's all it does.
2nd one is dark blue -- should be 12v with key on.

Other years may have different colors.

REMEMBER - this will lock the OD on ALL the time.

Yup, try that. If it doesn't go into OD with the switch, then you will either need to replace the Solenoid, or you may have burnt up the OD. You will probably know which one when you drop the pan to do the solenoid.

Good to know the wire colors! I have a non-O/D tranny so I'm not real up to date on the harness. Thansk for getting us the info! I added this thread to the sticky too.

Isn't a 97 the newer style with the lockup converter? You can wire a switch to engauge the OD on our trans but it isn't going to lock up the torque converter like the newer style trans. These are a hydraulic trans that the OD is electronically controlled, but unfortunately the torque converter is in no way controlled with electronics. So the 97 this helps because it is basically in direct-drive all the time and will not disengauge so helps with keeping speed and fuel mileage, but it does work the trans a lot more. With a trans gauge you would be able to monitor that and reduce risk of damage.

Those newer trans are working off the same system as a 700R4 in a Chevy if your familiar with how those work.

So in summary from what I understand this will have absolutely no benefit besides keeping your truck from kicking out of OD, but with the kick-down cable still attached I'm not sure it will even stay engauged at all times.

Feel free to correct me trans wizards.

Thats what they are talking about. His OD is not working, the thread titile is a little miss leading.

Oh and all 94+ trannys in the Dodge Cummins are Lock-Up TC.

[QUOTE=RSWORDS;503945]Thats what they are talking about. His OD is not working, the thread titile is a little miss leading.

I understand that his OD isn't workin, but it seemed that he was under the impression that he could accomplish the same thing with our style transmission as what his friend had done with the 97. Which sadly we can't

These are some helpful info on that trans and locating wiring.

Try the switch to override the OD first to see if you even need those parts.

But if you were trying to accomplish the lockup like the newer 97 then you would have to do a tranny swap.
