I prefer synthetic oils because I live in a very cold climate. Which shouldnt be an issue for you. However, many people have put many, many miles on these engines using conventions oils. Excellent choices are: Delo 400, Rotella T, Mobile delvac 1300, Valvoline etc.

I really feel the best filter you can use for your truck is the Fleetguagrd LF3894. This filter has the Stratapore synthetic filter media (read very fine filtration) and Fleetguard is a sister company to Cummins. How could you go wrong? At the very least, stay away from Fram filters. They are junk.

I'm running ValPar 0W40 with a John Deere filter. No problems so far, and the price is great as I work for a Deere Construction Equipment dealership.
