Default AC on the fritz...need advice ASAP!!!!

I need some guidance here guys. My AC compressor crapped out on me. The pully on the front is locked up. It is summer in Texas...'nuff said!"give:

So, is there a particular order or method of removing the compressor? I have never replaced one, but I can turn a wrench once I know what I am doing.

I guess I am more concerned about ruining the lines, etc. I also heard that it is best to replace the evaporator when opening the lines. Is this really necessary? Trying to get some cold air on a budget here and I don't want to buy anything that I don't HAVE to get.

Any advice on this would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

Glen

Are you sure the actual pulley is locked up or are you just looking at the center section. The center section will stop and the pulley keep turning with the belt.

The pulley itself is way locked up. When I reach my hand down there to turn the pulley, nothing moves. Not to mention, it completely fried the belt.

Thanks Bubba. It sounds like I will be puttin' out some dough. That damn thing is locked up tight as a drum. Did you replace yours? Looking for some info on the best way to replace it.

Thanks for the link!

Yeah, it sounds like the bearing is locked up. I would imagine you can get away with just replacing the compressor. Once you get it all together, you will have to take it to a shop and get them to pull vaccuum on it, then recharge it. Your supposed to get the freon vaccuumed out, but if you chose to crack the lines yourself and let it out, be careful, that refrigerant will burn you just like propane

Watch letting out the Freon, I have seen guys really hurt themselves not evacutaing the system. One guy I use to work with lost 50% of his eyesight after getting a shot to the face.
