Default New to Dodge diesels

I'm new to Dodge diesels. I've nearly 3/4 complete with a 1983 Mercedes Diesel resto and wanted a dodge with a Cummins to replace my ford ranger.

There are several problems, with the 1990 Ram ctd, and would like to know more about what causes them. The main reason I bought it is because the frame and body is in real good shape.

1) the Speedometer does not work. and has not worked for 50,000 miles. What are the common causes of this.

2) ABS light stays on. where to I look?

What repair manuals are available for my truck? I don't see a haynes or chilton offering currently in print for this truck.

Autoparts store Didn't have a haynes manual for your truck? You might try ebay.

Damn that sounds like my truck. For the ABS light im bettin on the master cylinder. The speedo is probably just the cable. I need to replace both of those things on my truck but havent gotten around to it yet

if you want my opinion, dont even waste your money on a chilton or hayes those things are useless if you ever want any real advice. money is much better spent for the 20 bucks on alldata.com its your vehicle and year specific.

good unless you want info on the motor or electrical system.

ABS could be the control unit on the rear frame rail. speedo could be cable or the reducer box on the tailshaft

Default Thanks

I appreciate the upload of the ABS section to this forum so that I can fix the truck. I realize that most haynes books and Chilton books are garbage for major repairs, but they are handy for routine things such as brakes, tierods, basic engine stuff....etc. I bought the FSM for my mercedes simply because the Haynes book for that car was useless beyond simple stuff. Every vehicle I've ever worked on has it's own ryhme and reason, and I've bought the FSM for every vehicle I've ever owned. Right now no money for the FSM plus the Diesel suppliment.

that being said, do I access this scanned copy of the abs system. I think the both problems might be related as both work off a sensor of vehicle speed.

Thanks again.

They are not the same...

Your speedo is probably the cable or the gear in teh tranny. The ABS in these trucks is stupid simple.

Try this and let me know if teh PDF for the ABS pops up.

i'll seconds the sensor... my brake light and abs light are on continuously... unhooked the pressure differential valve and double checked that the parking brake was all the way up; got the multi meter out and ohm'd the sensor and got an O.L, i havetn replaced this to see if it's the acutal culprit or not b/c well... it's not vital other than an anoying light
