i think it has something to do with the ULSD and timing. the 89 used to have a nice diesel smell to it; but after getting the old girl cleaned out and bumping the timing unless it is a THICK black smoke it's got a different smell to it. just never would have though of moth *****... this is however just a hunch and nothing to back it up.... just what i've attributed the smell to

I guess blowby could smell like mothballs. have you relocated your blowby bottle? Are you talking about the smoke, or just a general smell in or around the truck?

My truck doesn't get run very often anymore but it stinks too when I idle it. Never used to before really. I suspect it is the timing, the fuel and the lack of use but I can't be sure.

If your oil consumption goes up I would start to be more concerned about it though.

well i was out and about; started the old girl up today. the wind was blowin right and brought the smoke cloud in the cab... it does in fact smell a little like moth ***** . newer trucks at idle to me smell a little like propane burning. i'm going to stick with my hunch... smells like pure fuel (no oil) and the blow by does smell like oil... you can smell it pretty good after a hard run

Ive never noticed that smell myself but is stands to reason becuase the stuff they make mothballs with is a petroleum component.

HowStuffWorks "What is in moth *****?"

"The idea with both chemicals is to kill moths and moth larvae with the fumes. Both naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene sublimate, meaning they transition from a solid straight to a gas. The gas is toxic to the moths."
