Default 04 diesel not running right

ok here is the deal. friend has a 04 powerstroke. going up a hill it was blowing alot of black smoke towing no load. this just started. i rode with him today after cleaning the egr valve and it seemed to do it on level ground slowly accelerating like it was missing every 1 to 2 seconds and when it had a miss a little black smoke came out. he took it to a mech. shop and the scanner said no codes. he also said he had the oil changed awhile back and it is an 1/8 of inch over full,1/4 at the most. do these trucks if a injector is bad leak oil into the transcase like a early model chevy does? are the injectors in side the head or are they external. ant help would be great. what does a bad egr valve do? thanks

smell the oil to see if it smell like fuel. as far as the egr valve just unplug it and forget about it.

yes if an injector goes bad they can leak fuel into the crankcase.
put some oil from the dip stick on a piece of cardboard and watch it. the oil will no spread out like the diesel will.

a power balance test is best when cold but if the oil is over full u got an injector problem sometimes a balloon test on each head is the only way to narrow it down then dye has to be added and the valve covers removed
