Angry 1997 12 valve broke the sensor above crank shaft

Hello, i just fixed the killer dowel pin on my 1997 12 valve, as i was putting the harmonic balancer on i did not notice the sensor above was improperly located and it broke :-( is this a Crank postion sensor? and where do i get one? How do i instal it correctly? is there a measurment or gap between the balancer and the sensor? also what does this thing do???? i am new to diesels and electronics. P.S looked for this part all over and it seems like no one talks about it or sells it online, or maybe i just don't know how to type it in the search engine? Thanks for any help!!!!!

IIRC that is for the tach signal..... let me do some looking on where you might be able to get it.... if no parts stores have it it might be a dealer item

on a 12 valve the only thing you need for the engine to run is fuel pressure (mechanical lift pump), power to the starter so it'll spin over, and power to the shutoff solenoid to allow fuel in the pump. IIRC that is all these motors NEED to run.

I have that sensor off of a 94 CTD. I thought it went out and replaced it but it turned out to be the tach in the cluster, and they wouldn't let me return it.

I don't know how to PM but I will try to PM my contact info

The clearance is about a playing card thickness, but if it's working OK, leave it alone.
