Ok, im on my way to work this mornin. Stop in a truck stop for a coffee. Go to take off and my '03 dies. Just flat out dies like i turned off the key. The distance to empty was at 0 but im usually good for at least 50 miles when that happens, and it just went to 0. Was gonna fuel up after work. Well, i started it back up (started fine, no excessive cranking). Pulled up to the pump and put $20 in to hurry and get to work. Drove fine the remaining 2 miles. Anyone ever had something like this happen?

 

musta been on a slite angle to where it wasnt gettin fuel...............yer runnin yer tank to low man, dont let it get below 1/4

 

Ok, new problem. Now, when going down the highway and going up a hill, anytime the truck is working a little, it surges losing power. I hope its the fuel filter, not the cp3. Its starving for fuel. Im thinking when i ran it low i sucked up junk in my filter? Do cp3s ever get weak or do they just stop working when they wear out?

how much fuel is in the tank right now?

you also may have some junk in the tank partially blocking the pickup tube/screan

did you fill the tank when a transport was dropping fuel??

 

It has less than a quarter right now. Im gonna fill it up today. And i should get to change my filter friday, i work some messed up hours so it will have to wait till then. May have to borrow my dads truck.

 

chances are really good that you dont have a plugged filter. The culpret is probably that infamous lift pump unless you have some aftermarket pusher pump added to your rig.

i had a '03 dually that had a surging problem and it was the fuel control actuator "FCA" that was stuck. also it had a lot of trash in the fuel filter.

 

Don’t know if my situation was or is the same as yours but my lift pump was on its way out and I didn't know it.
One day I was on my way out to pick up some wood for building a few cabinets and hit the interstate with the trailer in tow, just got up to highway speed and the truck just fell flat on its face chokin sputterin and buckin around (well over a half tank) put her in neutral cleared up and babied it home.
Changed out the pump and filter, (no sense in changing one and not the other) haven't had an issue since

But yeah in the winter time I never go below a half tank

 

Well, replaced the filter and it didnt help at all. It will run ok for a little bit but then it will lose power. Then it will run ok for 30 seconds again then start losin power again. I can be goin 40 and floor it and i wont gain any speed. RPMs just go up and down a little

 

lift pump i bet.........got gauges?
