Default Turbo underboost code being set

Hi Folks,

I haven't been on the forum for a while. I Have a 2006 F 250 6.0L. Through the course of a few years I've done maintenance on my truck with your help and it;s all been good. The last thing I've done was to have my injectors rebuilt. That pretty much cleared up a lot of stumble when it was cold and now my truck seems to run fine except mostly when it's cold I get a code st stating "generic turbo underboost". The truck seems to run fine it just get's frustrating to have to clear the code all the time.

I don't know if it's related or not but I also have a very small oil leak somewhere up around the general area of the turbo. What I mean by small it seems more like a light mist maybe. I can see it around my oil filter housing and along the bottom of the turbo where it sets in the cradle and also up above on the splash shield above the turbo. The leak is very small because I'm not using any oil between oil changes.

I also hear a kind of high pitch whistle right when I start my truck almost like an air leak somewhere. I'm trying to isolate the whistle and the oil mist issue hoping that will cure my turbo boost issue.

I was wondering if anyone else has seen or heard this type of problem and if it possibly be from the tube and O ring connected to my turbo.

I have 175K miles on my truck and it performs just fine. I would like to find and isolate the oil mist and the under turbo boost hoping that will clear my check engine code.

When the truck gets warmed up I can clear th code and it does not reset until it gets cooled down. Even with the check engine light on the truck runs fine.

As always I thank you all for any input you may have on this.

Thank you,

Whitey Cook

Whitey,
I had a problem with the "underboost code" being set on my 6.0, and while I always use a fuel additive lubricant (Conklin Diesel Plus), I was advised by a guy that runs a fleet of Fords with the 6.0, to use a bit more than usual (25% or so). Since I started doing that, I haven't had any more problems. I don't know if that was the solution or not, but I still have my fingers crossed!

Default Turbo Underboost

Thanks for the reply. I haven't been as attentive as maybe I should have been regarding the diesel fuel additive. I have put some in from time to time but I think I'll start doing it more frequently.

A bit more background... At about 236K miles my son and I changed out the turbo due to an EGR/Egr cooler failure, It was an OEM rebuilt unit. I now have 275K on the truck. My truck is probably classified as a grocery truck in that it doesn't do a lot of heavy pulling. Some of what I've been reading seems to suggest I should maybe take it out an :blow the cobwebs out" so to speak.

I've also done all the other 6.0L stuff, FICM rebuild, standpipe dummy plugs, HPOP, glow plugs and harness and coolant reservoir. Not all at once but over the past 4-5 years.

Now with the turbo underboost...this seems only to happen when it is cold sitting at an idle. If it warms up to normal operating temperature without the code being set, I can run it all day with no problems. If I let it set and cool off it will set the code again.

My PSI gauge for the turbo appears to read properly. It comes up on acceleration and drops off when i take my foot off of the gas. The truck runs fine and seems to have plenty of power. I just get irritated with the check engine light.

I'm also wondering if the light oil mist up and around the turbo area is somehow related or if that's another issue. I'm thinking I perhaps have some type of leak that is pretty small and when the engine warms up it seals. When the engine cools down it reappears causing the code to set. If it was the VGT sensor/solenoid wouldn't it be a more continuous problem regardless of it was cold or not? Also is there an easy way to check the VGT with a multimeter? I've checked the rubber tubes connecting the turbo to the intake etc and have not seen any evidence there of a problem.

As always thanks for any input. I will be buying some diesel additive and become more diligent in adding it when I fuel up as well.

Again thanks
