Default New Goal

In a few short weeks I start a new job, which means a larger tax bracket and more income. I have a new goal for my first gen. the goal is 30 mpg, which is a hard to imagine, but I would like to get as close as I can... I get about 20 mpg cruising at 65 down the highway in its current state.

I am trying to make a parts list of parts that will help be accomplish my goal or come near it.

Ideas welcome:

How much increase of mileage as anyone experienced with swapping out the tc? thats where I am going to start. along with exhaust.

I can see fuel supply system modifications, injectors and a gear venders in my future.

I love the truck and want to keep driving..you don't see them enough on the roads anymore in my opinion, but michigan roads rot everything.

Ugh...

Manual. To get 30 you're going to need to build the entire vehicle as extreme as possible.
Lots of weight reduction.
Custom injectors with some serious voodoo in them.
Pizza cutter tires.
Anything to give you aerodynamics.
Sure you can't drop it into a Craftsman Truck Series chassis or something? Rolling chassis go for ~$5000.
Probably wouldn't need that much fuel, might even consider downsizing to something off a Volkswagon...
Drive really slow.
HY35?
Good exhaust and intake.

lots of cardboard and duct tape, make the body as streamline as possible.

and you can cover up the grill with cardboard and tape, the engine bay acts like a big parachute at fast speeds. but it wont over heat if you go easy on it.

also a fuel cooler too during the summer.

Have you considered diluting veg oil into the diesel fuel to earn better mileage for the fuel dollar? I am intrested how you go anyway so keep us updated to your upgrades

I don't think you'll get anywhere near 30 with a non-lockup auto. you'll definitely want a tighter converter in there, though; that'll help quite a bit by keeping the engine at lower rpm.

should be lowered but being a 4x4 raises some issues with that.

pizza cutter tires like begle said, with an all-hwy tread and aluminum wheels will help.

a GV or other auxiliary overdrive.

synthetic lubes: t-case, diff, engine.

L.E.D. lights on the windshield washer nozzles.

four 1-into-2 exhaust tips for a total of 8.

Im hoping to get the bio processor running soon or trying to work a deal with a local farmer that produces large quantities for his farm equipment and his fleet of cummins.

It's 4wd? A 4wd isn't ever going to be at 30... Cut out the weight and the resistance.

My first 93 got a consistant 23 when it was all stock. It got 21 with 37" Goodyears and 2 turns on the fuel screw. The direct drive of the 5spd helps a lot. I havn't hit 20 with my 92 or 93 auto trucks. Hopefully when I get around to putting in the new converter I will though. You can try bumping the timing a little. I picked up some by going the standard 1/8 of an inch. I'd put a valet in so you don't have to always drive a pig.
