Default block heater

hey guys my block heater on my 05 common rail isn't working. I have already replaced the power cord my question is. Does the heater its self screw out of the block or is it internally mounted? I have had people tell me that you have to get in to the internals of the engine to get to it. I don't want to get this involved over the block heater. I am thinking of a external tank heater if this is so, just looking for some reliable info and I know I can find it here thanks guys.

IIRC, it screws out. There should be a "hex" on it so that you can get a wrench on it and twist.
