P7100 timing recommendations
I will soon be putting my pump back on after getting some broken bolts extracted (thanks to the previous owner) and he said he had advanced it some but couldn't give me a number... So im wondering what is working well for everyone to try to figure out where I should set mine. Ive got marine 370 injectors, a hx-40, and no fuel plate.
If you have head studs ..... 18* is good .... if no studs 15.5* would be "safe" .... dont do too much till you get studs intalled ..... I lifted my Head and now have to do HG and studs ....... so about $600.00 later it should run awesome
yeah ive got studs and HG. I put timing back to stock when I put my IP back on and I want to advance it but im saving up for a timing kit. Ive got a gear puller and thought about just using a standard dial indicator but I havent. Mine runs good as it is but i figured with it advanced it should run even better
Like stated any higher than 16* and you're risking blowing a headgasket. But at the same time i think i have read you shouldn't go over 18* with 370s, you'll start really spraying outside the piston bowl then.
Well with studs and such ... I think reasonabley 18-20* is about as high as your gonna wanna go for street/Daily driving usage .... If the 370's are having or giving you heat issues , put a bit thicker washer under the injector and that should help with the spray pattern..
I haven't had any heat issues now that I have an egt gauge. When I first got it the guy had the star wheel fully forward and I was just keeping it out of o/d when towing b/c of so much smoke. Since it was the first cummins I've had I didn't know how easily adjustable everything was or really what to do.... Long story short... Starwheel full forward, no fuel plate, 370's. The hx35 didn't last long pulling horses around. Got a 40 and put the egt, and tork tech ofv. Turned the star wheel wayyyyyy down. Without a trailer I can get on it and Stay right at 1000.
