Default Education help needed on 6 litre

Reading many answers makes me realize the depth of knowledge some of you have. Often I have no idea what you are saying and not only is it frustrating it is also damn expensive as I must take my 2004 F250 Super Duty to the shop every time it misbehaves.
So would it help to buy an engine book, would it be descriptive enough? Or would someone have an internet source or other reading material you'd recommend. Obviously I need to get educated. While I have not done much mechanical work I did maintain my old farm tractor and even worked on my aircraft in which I trusted my butt.
It would be nice to know what key parts are likely to fail (done the egr twice, intercooler once and now in for high pressure oil pump) and therefore what should be upgraded before then and even where to buy more durable aftermarket if it exists.
Bit of a tall order I guess, but thanks for your help
Jim

Powerstroke 6.0L Technical Intro Manual
this is pretty informative.
best place to buy factory parts-Tousley Ford online.
Best software to get- Auto Enginuity, around $360 and can do most tests dealer can do
Best mods to do- delete the egr cooler, rebuild oil cooler, add COOLANT FILTER!!!!!!!!, delete the catalytic converter, install ARP head studs and ford factory gaskets if and when HG fail, had 270k on my factory bolts before I added studs, didn't blow a HG, just time to do it.
ADD a COOLANT FILTER, after rebuilding oil cooler, extremely hot oil can cause all kinds of problems including blown Orings on injectors.
If you ever have a issue with the HPOP going out on you it would be the perfect time to update the HPOP to a Billet Pump from Diesel Site, they are much better then the factory ones and run about $1000

You can find Ford OEM tech repair and wiring manuals on Ebay. Sometimes they are a bit pricy but good to have on hand.
