Default Speedometer gear in Getrag?

How the hell do I get it, the speedo gear housing, out once I got the VSS off of it and the retaining clip? This is in a 91.5 D250. The word around the campfire is it'll pull out with a little motivation, but this rascal is in there for keeps! Any tricks? Also, on the 2wd Getrags, was there a ratio reducer (90 degree box)? I have heard yes and no, I'd like to hear from someone that can tell me for sure. Seems to be one less thing to screw up, and save a couple bucks, by changing out the speedo gear instead of putting another link in the chain. WHEN my speedometer wants to work, its reading about 37% high. Anyone know which gear they actually have in their speedo? I've had the speedo head unit rebuilt, I'm rewiring the original wires that lead to the junction near the back of the engine, and I hope to have some accuracy restored soon...

The getrags do have a L shaped adapter im not sure what your asking on your first question once you remove the retaining clip the adapter will come out the tail shaft of the transmission it splines in so to speak. the vss screws on the top part of the adapter.

Okay- I'll crawl under it this week and see if I can't get it out and cleaned up. The initial question is really how does the gear housing come out, since I've had the retainer off and that housing seemed hopelessly stuck. The other question was whether or not the 2wd Getrags came with the 90 degree or L shaped reduction gear between the VSS and the speedometer gear housing. It seems like there has to be a "baseline" of parts needed to run a speedo, and putting the 90 degree reduction box just seems to add one more link in the system that can break.

Thanks-

What he said! Usually, they come out pretty easily. If its too bad, I usually give it a shot of Minnesota Fast Freeze.... and they pop right out.
I believe Napa carrys something similar, but I buy the stuff by the case from Goodsons.
If your careful, you can use a pr. of ChannelLocks and some PBBlaster....it'll free up....
