Default Pump Timing

Hey everyone,

I have a quesiton relating to the timing gear for the injection pump. Is there a mark that it should line up with on the camshaft gear or can it be moved to match the pump keyway with the pump mounted to the truck? The pump is timed and locked to match TDC #1 on the truck. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

Get yourself a repair manual for your truck. Or search the site here for 'timing your pump'. Its more than aligning up a few marks, to do it correctly you need a few specialized tools. BUT, if your gonna keep your truck, buy them, you'll eventually need them.
Oh Yes.....WELCOME ABOARD!

There are timing marks on the gears. What are you doing to your engine or IP (Injection pump)

I had the injection pump off to reseal it. I also did the KDP fix and am ready for reassembly. I have heard a whole bunch of things on timing and was a bit unsure. The injection shop said that turning the input shaft so the keyway lines up with the mark on the pump means that it is timed for TDC #1 on the truck. I had the pump gear off to kill the dowel pin and put it back on in the same spot I took it off. After adjusting the valves I made sure the truck was again on TDC #1 and if I were to put the pump on, the keyways would not have lined up. If the truck is at TDC and the pump is suppose to be but the keyway doesn't match up, what is the next move. Some guys say the pump doesn't have to be timed and to just turn the shaft so the keyways do line up and you are good to go. Sorry for the story book of an explanation but I didn't want to leave anything out.

Thanks for the help Jason, she runs like a top. Just need to wrangle up a fuel heater gasket and I think she will be good to go.
