Im in the same boat myself. Been doing alot of research on transmissions upgrades and for what your looking for I'd say a good triple disc TC, upgrade your valve body, and a billet input shaft just to be on the safe side. All that should still keep you in your $2,500 limit.

I'm in the process of upgrading mine but its my first transmission job so im learning as I go, but I almost got it figured out. I have the exact setup which I ordered from ATS, so after I install it I'll let you know how it holds up with my smarty.

Yes what would be the best bet for an upgrade on a budget? I have a 2003 5.9 2500 4x4
That seems to be having some issues.

With out knowing what upgrades you have or plan to have its hard to say.Because if you upgrade torque converter without doing valve body, clutches or having shafts checked there will always be a weak area.i'll let you know how this used Goerend that was freshened with new clutches works out.Good luck
