5th gear retainer install

I bought I 98 12v 5 speed with blown this gear so shop is buildin up tranny. Im gunna buy the 5th gear splined retainer from ebay. When I pick up tranny before I put t case on the retainer slides on the shaft between t case and tranny? I don't have to dissasemble. And how does the retainer stay on and not slide back?

I bought the 5th gear nut fix, but it goes inside the tranny. You have to do it at time of rebuild or rip it back apart later. Post a link to what you bought. Maybe it is something new...
