Default Horrible MPG!

I drove ~350 miles on a full take and I was down to a quarter tank! What could cause this I could usually go 500 miles till quarter. Time replace air dog filters? My intake looks a little dirty could tht be a problem? I got a bhaf air filter.

Both could cause that. Valves been adjusted lately? How many miles on the truck?

I got 185k on the truck. Haven't adjusted the valves and my air filter is pretty dirty and I got the air dog like 15000 miles ago so I'm not sure if I should change em yet. I'm cleaning the air filter tonight.

definately get the valves adjusted. If theyve never been done, theyre way overdue. Ya might be a bit overdue on the filters as well.

You can get filters @ Cummins or an auto parts store that carries Fleetguard, Wix, Donalson, but stay away from cheapies. You want something in the way of 7 to 5 microns filtering. Cheapies will get you roughly 18-20 microns or more filtration and thats murder on injectors. (the higher the micron number= worst filtering; the lower micron number = better filtering. Or you can get Fass, AirDog, and the like systems and get down to 2 micron filtering. Check out the vendors on this forum site for filtering systems.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can adjust the valves yourself. There is a write-up on the procedure for such a task. Just type your inquiry into the "search box" at the top of the screen, and the info will come up for you. Thats what I did. Make sure its correct for your year truck. Its not all that involved, but certainly take your time and do not rush it. I did mine myself about 60k miles ago, and i had never done it before. In fact Ive never owned a cummins before this one. Just follow directions/ procedure carefully and you'll be golden. If youre not confident in your abilities, then you can have a shop do it, but I dont know what the cost is for that. Or, have a knowledgable friend do it for you. Cool?

I have 2 ASE certified mechanic friends and yes I found both filters for 50 dollars! but I think I am capable I do the valve job myself. Doesn't look too hard and in pretty mechanically inclined. Thanks everyone
