Default 1996 cummins questions

I have just bought a 1996 dodge 12v cummins and have looked up the stock hp for an automatic it is 180hp this seems low but anyways I have been looking at peoples trucks on here and they claim to be getting more hp but it says stock or has no mods that affect hp. JW are they just dumb or am i missing something?

Another thing when I bought it the owner said he turned up something to allow max boost anyone know what hes talking about and does this harm the engine?

Also is this how the others get more hp from stock engine?

thank you

Turning screws, grinding fuel plates, moving the afc housing use the search bar and it will help you immensely I don't know much about them old 12vs

For less than 350.00 I doubled my stock hp at the motor (160) and after I added dv's and injectors it's got to be close to 300+ at the wheels. It is has been the most responsive motor I have modded and it's definately been the cheapest!! I still like my old school Chevys but I love my 12 valve. These links explain step by step with pictures how to do the basic free mods- gauges are important though because you can get you egts hot with the free mods if you tow heavy.

Afc/ pump cutaway- 12 Valve AFC Mod's - New England Turbo Diesel Power

More afc tuning- afc mods (lots of pics) - DieselRam.com

Govenor springs really woke the truck up. Those come with directions.

I beg to differ...

To the original poster: GAUGES GAUGES GAUGES!!!! To tune your motor for more power, you need to have an idea what the heck is going on. So, if your truck doesn't have a good boost gauge or pyrometer (EGT - exhaust gas temperature gauge) then THAT'S what you need to do first. Then, after analyzing the boost and EGTs during YOUR driving style, and reading up on the workings and common "free" mods the 12 valve has to offer, you can go from there.

As mentioned already, search "P7100", "AFC tuning" <--there's a great sticky for this one somewhere, "boost elbow", and "12 valve mods" in general.

Also, if you're truck is an automatic, be prepared to sink funds there first before BOMBing too hard because that'll be the weak link.

It's an auto with 15,000 miles on a rebuild. It must have a slightly better than stock Tc because I have been beating on it for 4,000 miles/6months. I bought the truck with 240,000 miles and 10k on the rebuild. 10psi 4wd launches once in awhile as well to Chris_AK - get a pyro/egt gauge along with boost gauge and keep the boost under 35 psi and don't bury the pyro for too long and have fun.

To Chris_ak- here is what I have
3in1 Black Face Pyrometer, Digital Boost, and Pressure Gauge:Amazon:Automotive 3in1 Black Face Pyrometer, Digital Boost, and Pressure Gauge:Amazon:Automotive

I mounted the probe for the pyro pre turbo. I also ordered a pillar mount from amazon to hold this gauge. It comes with it own holder though. I'm happy with it so far aside from it being to bright. I might put some window tint over the gauge to help with the brightness.
