Am I daydreaming for looking for 20-25 mpg?
Ok first off a little about myself. I DONT have a truck(well diesel) yet. I'm in the market for a cummins(the 94-98 will prob be in my $ range). I HAVE to have a truck that can pull my 8,000lb boat on the weekends but something that gets good MPG as I drive 120miles(round trip) every day for work. The best part is I know what I need and it seems that the cummins is looking like it going to be the best truck for me because they get the best mpg out of the others and the 5.9 is a true no frills workhorse! But I need 20+ mpg because I don't need a fuel hog. I also know not to lift it and try to put big tires on it. 33's are going to be the biggest for me. So that being said.....with a intake,exhaust, and a fuel plate mod will I looking to be in the 20+ range ? I would appreciate any input as this will be my first cummins.
i get anywhere from 19 to 22 on the highway and u can see my mods in my sig and im runnen 33x12.50 baja claws and with some more afc tuning i know i cld get better u cld also add a water methanol kit to help
Awesome. Good to know that my numbers are not out of touch. How does the 24v comparison to the 12v mpg wise? Like I say... I haven't picked yet so I'm trying to figure out which would be the better choice for my needs. Thanks again for the help
A friend of mine has a 24valve 2nd gen.... he's getting a lot worse milage with the same tires as mine and same gears...
He also has a 24valve CR 04' and that's even worse...
to top it off.... another friend has a 6.7 CR 08' and his milage is THE WORST!
So.... a p-pumped 12valve 2nd gen is the winner !!!!

ya i wld definetly stick with the 12 valve ive got two buddies with 24 valves and i like mine a lot more plus i can outrun my buddy who has smarty jr. cold air intake and some kind of aftermarket injection pump and i have a long way to go on mine and i also get better milage than both them and u can tune these pumps jst for milage if u want
I've got a mildly tuned P pumped reg cab 2wd 5spd w/ 3.55's.... The best scenario basically. At 55-60 on the hwy I'll get 22-24mpg, bump that up to 70-75 and I'm down to an even 20mpg. It's all an rpm game, and I'd even go down to 3.32's so I could get the 22-24 @ 70-75 but it would hurt towing ability...
